What makes a Greeting Card?
By Sue Baumgardner
WHAT MAKES A GREETING CARD? This is one of those questions that can be answered with varied opinions... In the eyes of the beholder sort of thing. I will answer as the Card Designer for GCU/CardArtFromTheHeart. As a music composer, I've often been asked the definition of 'Music'. This is a similiar question to 'What makes a greeting card'. The conception varies with the artist, but most all conceptions materialized will be easily recognized by the vast majority as such (Music.. and/or Greeting Card.) My music has a balance between melody and rhythm often accompanied with lyrics to further express the emotional content. I might start with the Melody, or the Melody might come last. Same with rhythm and lyrics. Now this is close to my Greeting Card conception, also. I might start with the physical image for card front. Conversely, I might start with the inner verse content. Once I have the beginning idea, I usually do not have to 'hunt' for the companion idea. It will materialize in my mind's eye as the ideal companion, or 'other half' of the equation. Having said that, I feel that both images--the front visual and the inner verse (usually)-- should be of 'stand alone' emotional quality. At Card Art From The Heart, our cards are all emotional. The emotion may be sentimental, but need not be. It might just as well be humor. The emotion, while flexible and widely varied, is a must. We draw from our own hearts for every design. You will not find a Newspaper type inviting you to a Bridal Shower, with pertinent facts period. Expect your heartstrings to be plucked-- perhaps pizzacato--- perhaps piano or even forte-- but your heartstrings WILL vibrate and you will know you have found the Music of the message. That is the ART in our Cards.
